Clark Presented with 2010 GreenGov Presidential Award at White House Ceremony
For immediate release
October 15, 2010
"President Obama asked the Federal Government to lead by example when it comes to building a sustainable future focused on clean and renewable energy," said Nancy Sutley, chair of the White House CEQ. "These winning entries, representing seven Federal agencies, are clearly leading by example in their innovative use of environmentally responsible products and technologies."
The GreenGov Presidential Awards are part of President Obama's Executive Order 13514 on Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance, which states that the Federal Government should lead the nation's efforts towards achieving energy security and environmental health.
"What a great honor and recognition of the fantastic Residential Communities Initiative project that we have here at Fort Belvoir. It is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the many leaders who have planned and continued to improve the housing for our soldiers and their families throughout the years," said Colonel John Strycula garrison commander at Fort Belvoir, "Congratulations to everyone involved in helping make Fort Belvoir Housing the great product that it is. A true partnership and everyone should be proud."
In 2003, the Army and Clark began a 50-year public-private partnership to develop, rehabilitate and construct 2,106 homes on 576 acres at Fort Belvoir Army Garrison in Fairfax County, Virginia. The team at Fort Belvoir continues to adhere to the highest standards, raising the bar for sustainability and innovation in military family housing and serving as a model for commitment to excellence.
"It is an honor and a privilege to work with talented individuals such as the Clark team. They along with our Army staff have worked to create a clean sustainable community. Additionally, they are educating our Soldiers and their Families on the merits of living in a Green community. This award underscores the Army efforts in being good stewards of our environment" said Mr. Ivan G. Bolden, chief of Army privatization at the Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management.
The Belvoir installation was heralded for its numerous green features, programs, and community involvement. The trend-setting project boasts two military firsts: a mixed-use Town Center with solar panels that serves as a pedestrian-friendly model for incorporating residential and retail space while reducing the development footprint; and a LEED® Platinum Neighborhood Center that features a salvaged playground and stormwater management system to capture and treat 90% of annual runoff from rainfall.
"Presidential recognition is tremendous praise for Fort Belvoir as a forward-thinking, sustainable military installation," said Casey Nolan, development executive at Clark Realty Capital. "This award draws attention to Clark and the Army's continued work and investment in Fort Belvoir over the years. These dedicated efforts further our mission to provide the best quality homes and sustainable communities for service members and their families."
Fort Belvoir was chosen for the Building the Future Award as "the whole package," demonstrating sustainability from development and building construction to employee and community engagement.
