CBG Turns Over University of Kansas Dining Hall as Part of Student Housing Community

400-Seat Commercial Facility Reaches Substantial Completion
May 1, 2017

LAWRENCE, Kan.—CBG Building Company turned over today Central District's dining facility on schedule as part of a 1,249-bed student housing community on the University of Kansas (KU) main campus. A steel one-story structure containing multiple kitchens, KU's commercial dining hall will seat up to 400 students.

"I've spoken often about our mission and our aspirations to be recognized among the nation's top public research universities," said Bernadette Gray-Little, chancellor at the University of Kansas. "Our new Central District project gives us the resources to continue that mission and achieve those aspirations like never before."

Connected to an existing residential building one side and a new residential dormitory that CBG is building on the other, Central District's dining hall is part of a five-building community on main campus, of which the residential buildings offer amenity spaces, including a fitness area, lounge, laundry facilities, and courtyard with outdoor dining space. Dining and kitchen staff will be trained over the summer, in preparation for the 2017 fall school semester.

"We are excited to work with the University of Kansas and Edgemoor Development to add to KU's distinction by providing luxury housing and dining options to students," said Chris Hirst, senior vice president of CBG. "The new Central District dining hall and housing will contribute to the University of Kansas's academic success, and CBG is proud to be a part of that."

The new Central District housing will feature a variety of sustainable elements, including continuous exterior insulation, TPO roofing, low-flow water fixtures, LED light fixtures, and energy-efficient appliances and windows.

CBG will turn over one of Central District's residence halls in July of this year, in preparation for student move-in in August. Similar to Lark on 42nd, a 161-unit student housing community that CBG completed in Florida last August, Central District is constructed using a patented 3D model from Denver-based technology company Prescient that ships pre-designed and constructed building segments for greener and more efficient building.
