"On behalf of Multi-Housing News, it's my pleasure to congratulate Clark Realty Capital and Clark Builders Group," said Diana Mosher, editor-in-chief of Multi-Housing News. "Walkable communities are generating a lot of buzz and the demand will only continue to grow. Therefore this category is especially interesting to the editors at MHN and to the entire multi-housing industry."

Park Village at Fort Belvoir exemplifies the cohesive design, environmental consciousness, and attention to surroundings central to New Urbanism. Along the neighborhood's original "loop" style road network, the Clark team constructed 22 craftsman-style single family homes and seamlessly integrated them with two newly-restored World War I era historic houses.

Clark surpassed market standards for energy conservation with EnergyStar-qualified homes. The team employed efficient site planning, careful building techniques, and staffed a trained arborist to preserve trees as close as a few feet from new homes.

"The Park Village community demonstrates the standard of quality design and context-conscious development that MHN salutes," said Casey Nolan, development executive at Clark Realty Capital. "We are honored to be recognized as a top project by such a prominent organization."

This year's MHN judging panel included accredited professionals in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and principals in architecture. Judges considered the overall composition, functionality, aesthetics, special attributes and sustainable elements of each project. The panel took special note of projects that demonstrate innovation and understanding of surroundings.

"The judges commented that Park Village exemplifies sensitive development," said Mosher. "They appreciated the way this project incorporates existing residences to create an effective and pedestrian-friendly community that fits the traditional model of middle America. Park Village is a fine example of contextual design."

The awards ceremony was held as part of Multi-Housing World's 2008 Convention and Exhibition, which took place in Denver from September 17-19. Each of the 2008 Design Excellence Award winners will be published in the October issue of Multi-Housing News Magazine.
