Clark CARES Supports Local and Military Community at Veteran’s Day Charity Golf Tournament

Annual Two-Day Event Raises $250,000 for Military Nonprofits and Other San Diego Charities
November 14, 2012

SAN DIEGO—On November 8 and 9 Clark Builders Group, Clark Realty Capital, and Clark Construction hosted the eighth annual Clark CARES charity golf tournament at Maderas Golf Club. The two-day event welcomed 240 golfers and raised over $250,000 to benefit several charitable organizations that proudly serve the San Diego community.

Among these groups was repeat beneficiary Chelsea's Light Foundation, which provides scholarships for local college-bound students who mirror the academic accomplishments and service-over-self ethic of late local teenager Chelsea King.

"Chelsea's Light's sole mission is to protect kids, and I was overwhelmed with the genuine compassion and commitment that everyone involved with this tournament has for the safety of children," said Brent King, co-founder of Chelsea's Light Foundation. "Clark CARES is truly a community leader and is a shining example of how an organization can create change by galvanizing its employees, partners and sponsors to make a positive difference."

Another local tournament beneficiary was the Emilio Nares Foundation (ENF). After losing their only child to cancer, Richard and Diane Nares created ENF to support families experiencing similar struggles. Inspired by parents with limited means who would take their sick children on two-hour bus rides for treatment at Rady's Children Hospital, Richard and Diane created the "Ride with Emilio" program. Their van, which transports children with cancer to Rady's Children Hospital, serves 20 families weekly at no cost.

"From our Board, Staff, and our families we want to thank Clark CARES and everyone who made this generous grant possible," said Richard Nares. "With an increase in ridership and gas costs, this money will assist our Ride with Emilio Transportation, which picks up children for their chemotherapy and other related cancer treatments throughout San Diego County."

In celebration of Veteran's Day, Clark CARES also presented a donation to 3 Minutes Out, an organization created to commemorate Special Operations Command Jon Thomas Tumilson by providing scholarships and assistance to other military families. JT was one of 30 soldiers who lost their lives in the Chinook helicopter that was shot down in Wardak Providence, Afghanistan on August 6, 2011.

"Thank you to Clark CARES for allowing me to come and represent 3 Minutes Out at your amazing event. I can't put into words what it means to me to do something that honors my fallen friend JT, and this event allowed me to do just that" said one Navy SEAL. "I was amazed at the generosity of all who gave and participated."

Through the tremendous support of industry partners, Clark CARES has raised over $2.1 million to date and contributed to more than 50 charitable organizations in just San Diego alone. Proceeds from this year's event were made possible by 75 corporate sponsors, many of whom return year after year.

On both evenings of the event, the tournament included a dinner and awards reception at the Del Lago Ballroom of Maderas Golf Club. Reception highlights included a raffle, the announcement of tournament winners, and a formal donation presentation to the charitable recipients.
