Clark CARES Celebrates Military Community at Veteran’s Day Charity Golf Tournament

Annual Two-Day Event in San Diego Raises $270,000 for Military Nonprofits and Other Local Charities
November 17, 2011

SAN DIEGO — Last week, Clark Builders Group, Clark Realty Capital, and Clark Construction hosted the seventh annual Clark CARES charity golf tournament at Maderas Golf Club. The two-day event welcomed 240 golfers and raised nearly $270,000 to benefit several charitable organizations that proudly serve the San Diego community. Among these groups was repeat beneficiary Chelsea's Light Foundation, which provides scholarships for local college-bound students who mirror the academic accomplishments and service-over-self ethic of late local teenager Chelsea King.

"The Clark CARES team has so much warmth and absolutely radiates a sense of commitment and passion in support of our community and some of the non-profits working within it" said Robin Liszewski, executive director of Chelsea's Light Foundation. "We were honored to be among such deserving recipients."

Also supporting the local youth is Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of San Diego County and its unique program called Operation Bigs, which provides mentors to children of active military parents who are deployable.

"I just want to echo my gratitude for the great two day event Clark CARES did that benefited BBBS and our military mentoring programs. Everyone was so hospitable and the professionalism of the event was impressive," said Paul Palmer, president and CEO of BBBS of San Diego County. "The contribution will serve over 21 Marine and Navy children for an entire year."

In celebration of Veteran's Day, Clark CARES also presented donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, which offers a wide variety of programs to injured service members, and the United Warrior Survivor Foundation (UWSF), which dedicates its services exclusively to surviving spouses of Special Operations personnel killed in the line of duty.

Clark CARES selected UWSF in particular as a beneficiary in light of the recent helicopter crash in Afghanistan that took the lives of 31 US troops, most of them Navy SEALS. Clark staff and sponsors alike were honored to have several members of special operations forces in attendance at this year's event.

"I just wanted to say thank you for having me, especially after losing one of my best friends just three months ago and knowing that the majority of Americans have no clue," said one Navy SEAL. "It's unbelievably comforting to see people that realize that their freedom isn't free and that make the efforts to support the people that make their freedom possible."

Through the tremendous support of industry partners, Clark CARES has raised over $1.8 million and contributed to nearly 40 charitable organizations in just San Diego alone. Proceeds from this year's event were made possible by more than 70 corporate sponsors, many of whom return year after year despite recent economic challenges.

On both evenings of the event, the tournament included a dinner and awards reception at the Del Lago Ballroom of Maderas Golf Club. Reception highlights included a raffle, the announcement of tournament winners, and a formal donation presentation to the charitable recipients.
