PETERSBURG, Va.—On October 13, Clark Builders Group (CBG) completed the Fort Lee Clark Builders Group Completes Advanced Individual Training Barracks (AIT) Barracks project, a basic training facility for the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). CBG finished construction of the LEED Gold project, which encompasses two five-story brick barracks as well as multiple support and operations facilities, under budget.

"CBG understood the importance of providing Army personnel with both a top-notch training facility and a place that they would feel at home," said Alexander Nowden, retired Army First Sergeant and USACE construction representative at Fort Lee. "The AIT Barracks have set the bar for the rest of Fort Lee's expansion."

The USACE awarded CBG the Fort Lee AIT barracks contract in December 2009, just 10 weeks after selecting CBG as the general contractor of the Warriors in Transition Barracks Complex at Fort Belvoir. The Fort Lee barracks are designed to accommodate a total of 1,200 Army personnel, and feature apartment-style homes with a variety of floor plans that include kitchens, spacious living areas, and walk-in bedroom closets.

The project's adjacent support and operations facilities include classrooms, administrative and operations offices, storage facilities, a reception area to welcome visitors, and state-of-the-art training facilities for soldiers in the AIT program. The Army AIT program provides hands-on training and field instruction for specialized career paths to soldiers after they have completed their Basic Combat Training. An outdoor jogging track, physical training pits, and access drives and parking areas, all of which meet USACE requirements, round out the community's amenities.

"Clark is proud of our performance on military projects. The Fort Lee AIT building is one of the more sophisticated wood structures of its kind and we are extremely proud to be a part of it," said Keith Anderson, president of CBG. "The project is not only environmentally friendly, but an integral tool to facilitate the Army's training programs."

Designed by architect LS3P Associates, the $68 million complex meets DoD Minimum Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings and LEED Gold certification requirements by the US Green Building Council. It is also part of the Northeast Region Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC), a program that allows qualified offerors to compete for design/build contracts.
