CBG Breaks Ground on 100% Affordable Community
Arlington, Va.—Today, CBG Building Company celebrated the groundbreaking of The Sweeney, a 432-unit, 11-story, fully affordable apartment community in the heart of Crystal City. Located steps from the Crystal City Metro and multiple bus routes, the community will deliver high-quality, sustainable housing with convenient access to transit, retail, and employment opportunities in one of Northern Virginia’s most connected neighborhoods. The Sweeny is developed in partnership with True Ground Housing Partners and partially funded by the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA).

Named in honor of Jean and Jack Sweeney, two of True Ground’s founders, The Sweeney will feature family-friendly amenities designed to support residents of all ages, including indoor and outdoor play areas, a library/lounge, wellness rooms, and open green spaces. The community is designed to achieve LEED® Gold certification and meet the U.S. Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) program standards.

Today’s groundbreaking brought together key stakeholders from across the region, featuring remarks by representatives from Amazon, Capital One, True Ground Housing Partners, Arlington County, and VHDA, who highlighted the importance of affordable housing in high-opportunity neighborhoods and celebrated the collaborative effort behind the project.
In addition to The Sweeney, CBG’s recent affordable housing work includes Terwilliger Place, a 160-unit mixed-use community in Arlington, Virginia; River Trail Village at Napa Valley College, a 280-unit student housing community in Napa, California; and Ovation at Arrowbrook, a 274-unit mixed-use community in Herndon, Virginia.
