Rockburne Estates

224 Rehabilitated Apartments

CRC's multi-million dollar renovation of Rockburne Estates received top honors from the District of Columbia Housing Finance Agency. The community was awarded the 2001 "Affordable Housing Development Award of Excellence" as the development that "most exemplifies quality affordable housing" in Washington. Built in 1967, Rockburne Estates was less than 25% occupied and severely distressed by the late 1990s. The interior remodeling involved new appliances, windows, paint, and carpet, in addition to refurbished balconies and patios. Exterior work included roof replacement, removal of underground storage tanks, new stormwater and sewer lines, new landscaping, and the addition of an on-site laundry facility, tot lot, and recreation area. Despite the extent of the renovations, prior residents were not displaced during construction.
