CBG Brings Public Art to Latitude Apartments Jobsite

Construction Walkway Designed in Collaboration with Local Elementary Schools
December 9, 2015

ARLINGTON, Va.—Over the past several months, CBG Building Company (CBG) has collaborated with two local elementary schools to create a public art walkway at its Latitude Apartments job, a 265-unit, mixed-use community under construction in Arlington near the Virginia Square-GMU Metro Station.

Fourth and fifth grade students from Barrett and Glebe Elementary painted 10 panels that CBG installed today to form a colorful, 64-foot-long collage fronting Fairfax Drive.

"Our students are so excited to share their art with CBG and the community," said Katie Aiken, art teacher at Barrett Elementary. "The experience provided me the opportunity to teach the importance of both public art and collaboration with our community partners."

Working closely with art teachers at both schools, CBG provided the eight-foot-tall paneled boards, art supplies, and the prompt: "What do you do for fun in the neighborhood?" Students' answers depicted a range of community activities including climbing trees, playing soccer, and enjoying tacos from a local food truck.

"We are thrilled that Barrett and Glebe Elementary students contributed their talents to the creation of our community art walkway," said Keith Anderson, president of CBG. "From the beginning, it was clear that each school desired to bring enthusiasm and a distinct perspective to this project. Their artwork brightens up Fairfax Drive and our construction team's jobsite."

Scheduled for completion in July 2016, Latitude is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification and will feature EnergyStar appliances, extensive green roofs, and a solar reflective ballast roof. Community amenities will include a rooftop plaza, bocce court, fitness center, dog wash room, and party room.
