Part of the Downtown Columbia Master Plan, the Metropolitan Downtown Columbia is a 380-unit, LEED® Silver mixed-use community that includes residential and retail areas. The Metropolitan features a ground-floor concrete podium below four to five wood-framed stories. The project surrounds a precast garage and consists of four distinct construction types separated by fire walls. The building’s exterior is primarily brick, cementitious panel, and aluminum windows. The Metropolitan is linked to the rest of the Warfield and Symphony Woods neighborhoods by a public green promenade. The community includes a swimming pool, wellness center, computer area, media area, pavilion, lounge, and two internal courtyards.
Building Green at The Metropolitan Downtown Columbia
The Metropolitan Downtown Columbia achieved LEED® Silver certification through the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The community employs sustainable design strategies that are cost-effective, energy efficient, and manageable. For instance, the project leverages construction activity pollution prevention, features water use reduction within the complex’s bathrooms, is built with recycled and regional materials, and is walkable to public transportation.
