Phase I of the Navy’s largest public/private venture to date includes 1,400 units of military family housing for Sailors and Marines in the San Diego region. The first neighborhood, The Village at NTC, includes 500 new townhomes on the site of the former Naval Training Center. The second neighborhood, The Village at Serra Mesa, was an older community that has been be razed and replaced with 900 new and affordable townhomes.
Building Green at San Diego Family Housing Phase I
Both neighborhoods in San Diego Family Housing–Phase I feature well-designed public spaces, pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, and convenient access to alternative transportation options. Mixed land uses, compact building design, a range of housing types, walkable neighborhoods, and utilization of existing developments are also among Phase I’s sustainable features. In 2003, The Village at NTC was recognized with the National Award for Smart Growth Achievement by the Environmental Protection Agency.
